121 Years Rose Celebrations – Kazanlak

The Rose Festival is a well-known celebration in Bulgaria. The Rose Festival in Kazanlak is the first in Bulgaria and has over 115 years of tradition. The first residents of Kazan, in 1903 organized a holiday in honor of the rose, flowers’ fertility, beauty, and gratitude for the livelihood of the Rose Valley. Today, the holiday has preserved the most essential part of the ancient rituals, recreating the joy of the coming rosebush and the hospitality of the hardworking residents of Kazanlak.

The Rose Festival takes place in the first week of June, and the first Friday is traditionally the city’s official holiday – Kazanlak Day when the newly elected Queen Rose is crowned and the culminating three-day celebrations begin. Saturday and Sunday are full of festive events, with the highlights being the official Rosober and Rosovarene rituals on Sunday morning and the colorful Kazanlak Carnival Procession on Sunday at noon, which is the biggest street carnival in Bulgaria.
