Kyustendil is organizing the festival “Panagia” – Raising of the Bread. The holiday is directly related to the church holiday “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” that is celebrated on August 15th.
The “Panagia” holiday takes place around churches and chapels dedicated to the “Assumption”, and is a cultural event for the presentation of the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition and church art and singing. The main highlight is the presentation of the ritual of kneading the Virgin’s bread and baking it in a pan, which takes place one day before the Assumption, but usually the holiday also includes thematically related exhibitions, musical performances, etc.
