The observatory was established in 1981. It is the largest astronomical observatory on the Balkan Peninsula and in Southeastern Europe.
The Rozhen Observatory is equipped with 4 telescopes. It provides a wide range of observations on astronomical and astrophysical tasks – from dynamics and physics of objects in the Solar System to research objects outside the galaxy such as asteroids and comets, spectrums of stars of different classes and types of variability, star clusters, close and distant galaxies, quasars.
The National Astronomical Observatory is well equipped for scientific meeting conduction, training courses, and schools. A visitation center with an 18 cm demonstration telescope, a lecture hall and a museum collection is available.
